What is the 'Retired Out' Rule? Tilak Verma becomes fourth player in IPL history to be out this way
In IPL, teams can strategically call a batsman off the field—here’s what the rule means and who else has been ‘Retired Out’ so far;

Tilak Verma was not out in the match played against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday, but he had to leave the field under the ‘Retired Out’ rule. This decision was taken by the Mumbai Indians team management, as Tilak was failing to hit big shots in the last overs. He scored 25 runs in 23 balls, which included only 2 fours. Mumbai Indians lost this match by 12 runs.
Tilak Verma has become the fourth player in IPL history to be called out under this rule. Now, let us know what the ‘Retired Out’ rule is in IPL.
What is retired out?
In IPL and other cricket formats, often the batsman leaves the field in case of injury and later, if the innings is not completed, he can return to bat again. But the ‘Retired Out’ rule is different from this.
Under this rule, any team can call its batsman out without the permission of the umpire and send another batsman in his place. This situation is called 'Retired Out' and in this the batsman cannot bat again.
However, if the opposing team and the umpires agree, the batsman can return to bat again, but he will have to wait until a wicket falls.
This rule gives flexibility to the teams from a strategic point of view, but its use has been seen very rarely, due to which makes it a topic of discussion.
Who else has been ‘Retired Out’ in IPL?
R Ashwin is the first player in this list who got himself retired out while playing for Rajasthan Royals in the 2022 IPL season.
Atharva Tayade retired out in the match against Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala while playing for Punjab Kings in 2023.
Sai Sudarshan also retired out while playing for Gujarat Titans in the same year. The captain of the team at that time was Hardik Pandya.
