Vikram Misri Appointed as India's New Foreign Secretary

India has appointed Vikram Misri as its next foreign secretary. His new position will begin on July 15. This selection takes place after Vinay Mohan Kwatra's term was extended by six months earlier this year. The Cabinet's Appointments Committee approved the appointment, according to an official statement from the Personnel Ministry. While Misri received a promotion, his responsibilities as the Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) were also reduced.

As a result of his 1989 enlistment in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Misri possesses extensive diplomatic knowledge. He has held significant positions as India's ambassador to China, Spain, and Myanmar, demonstrating his extensive knowledge of bilateral and global relations. Apart from his role as an ambassador, he has held positions in the Prime Minister's Office, the External Affairs Ministry, and on many international projects.

On January 1, 2022, Misri was appointed Deputy NSA and then became Foreign Secretary. Among his many positions, he served as the private secretary to three Indian prime ministers: Manmohan Singh, Narendra Modi, and I.K. Gujral. His employment at several Indian Missions around the world taught him more about getting along with people from diverse countries.

Misri was born on November 7, 1964, in Srinagar, India. Under I.K. Gujral's leadership, he began his career as an Under Secretary in the Office of the External Affairs Minister. Later, under then-Minister Pranab Mukherjee, he held significant roles in the Office of the External Affairs Minister and the Pakistan Desk. Misri had a lengthy and diversified diplomatic career during which many distinct things happened. It all began with his early employment and education.
