Let us tell you that for almost two months, the air quality in Delhi was running in the 'very poor' and 'severe category'. But now Delhiites have got some relief from pollution. On Thursday morning, the city's Air Quality Index was recorded at 161, which falls in the 'moderate' category. This is the cleanest day of December so far.
According to the data released by the Central Pollution Control Board, on Thursday (5 December) morning, the condition (Air Quality Index) in different areas of Delhi was as follows. 145 in Ashok Vihar, 147 in Wazipur, 220 in Mundka, 198 in Jahangirpuri, 184 in Narela, R.K. Puram 178, Anand Vihar 169, Pusa 169 and Punjabi Bagh 152. By 4 pm on Wednesday, the 24-hour average for the entire city had improved to 178, much better than the dangerous pollution levels seen in recent weeks.
The improvement in Delhi's air started from Wednesday afternoon, when the AQI level dropped from 211 in the morning to 178 by evening. During this time, people experienced clear skies and better visibility, giving them relief from the long spell of toxic air.
The Supreme Court has kept a close watch on the problem of pollution in Delhi and has ordered the Delhi government and law enforcement agencies to strictly implement pollution reduction measures. This includes a ban on construction work, strict control on vehicle emissions and measures to reduce pollution from industries.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that pollution levels may rise again due to western disturbances after December 7. Moderate fog and slow winds may worsen the situation, as the wind speed had already dropped to 20 km/h on Wednesday. The early warning system for Delhi indicates that there will be a need to be very cautious in the next few days.
