CM Nitish Kumar's intervention helps eliminate PMAY-G waiting list in Bihar
Centre allots 5.2 lakh additional houses for FY 2025–26; Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirms move to address rural housing backlog.;

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), the waiting list in Bihar has almost been eliminated. The Ministry of Rural Development has allocated an additional 5,20,742 houses for the financial year 2025–26. With the allocation of these additional houses, the long-standing waiting list under the PMAY-G since 2018 has been nearly cleared. Almost all beneficiaries listed are now on the path to receiving their homes. This development comes after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar raised the issue with the Central Government, following which this additional allotment was approved.
Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has written a letter to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar informing him about the decision.
According to the letter from the Ministry of Rural Development, the Union Cabinet in its meeting held on August 9, 2024, approved a plan to construct 2 crore additional houses to meet the growing housing needs in rural areas and extended the scheme until 2029. As per this decision, a total of 44,92,010 houses have been allocated to Bihar under PMAY-G from its inception until 2024–25.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was launched on April 1, 2016, to provide housing for all in rural India. The scheme is implemented with the cooperation of the states.
The letter particularly highlights that the allocation of these additional houses has effectively saturated the waiting list. Based on the current status, the pending list of beneficiaries in the state is now nearly complete. A new survey will now be conducted in the state to identify poor families living in kutcha (makeshift) houses to prepare a fresh list of beneficiaries.
