Big Meeting in Delhi: Ajit Doval and Amit Shah Discuss Situation in Bangladesh
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar Briefs Parliament on Current Developments as Former PM Sheikh Hasina Visits India; National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Senior Officials in Attendance
There is a stir in India amid the political upheaval in Bangladesh. While External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reacted to the issue in Parliament today, the National Security Advisor has also reached Parliament. It is being told that many senior officials including the Home Secretary are present here, in which the current situation in Bangladesh and border security will be discussed.
Home Minister Amit Shah also met the Foreign Minister today on the situation in Bangladesh. During this, both the ministers discussed the current situation in the neighboring country. He gave detailed information on the political crisis emerging in Bangladesh in Parliament today. He emphasized that the situation is very bad, there has been a situation of tension and violence since January 2024, especially in June and July due to the growing student movement against government policies, the situation got worse.
Jaishankar told the Parliament that about 19,000 Indian citizens were present in Bangladesh at the time of unrest, including about 9,000 students. He said that many of these students have already returned to India amid protests and violence. The minister expressed serious concern over the violence targeting minorities in Bangladesh, in which their businesses and temples are being targeted.
The Foreign Minister said that the Government of India is closely monitoring the situation, especially the security of minority groups. Jaishankar also appreciated the initiatives being taken by various organizations for the safety of the affected minorities. He said that India is in constant touch with the Bangladesh authorities. The Foreign Minister said that an appeal has been made to ensure the safety of the Indian Embassy.
During his address, Jaishankar discussed in detail the deteriorating situation after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina in response to the protests. He said that efforts are being made to form an interim government after the instability, which could lead to a major political change in Bangladesh. He said that India is ready to support former Prime Minister Hasina, who has sought refuge in India.
