In alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to modernize urban infrastructure and improve public amenities, Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Vice Chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), spearheaded a comprehensive Night Wet Cleaning Drive at Janpath Market on the night of April 17, 2025. This initiative forms part of the broader national goal of Viksit Bharat @2047.

The drive, conducted between 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., is a continuation of the successful program launched at Khan Market in November 2024. Shri Chahal emphasized that this effort is not merely about cleanliness, but about creating cleaner, safer, and more efficient public spaces for the citizens of New Delhi.

"The essence of 'Viksit NDMC' is about more than just cleaning," said Shri Chahal. "It’s about reimagining our markets as clean, safe, and vibrant hubs, aligning with the vision of a Viksit Bharat @2047."

Shri Chahal further noted that the deep cleaning model, which incorporates advanced mechanical sweepers and jet-washing technology, will be expanded to 12 additional markets, including Sarojini Nagar, Connaught Place, Pandara Road, Basurkar Market, Malcha Marg, and more. Additionally, the initiative will extend to NDMC Housing Complexes in collaboration with Residential Welfare Associations, ensuring that residents also play a part in maintaining cleanliness.

Shri Chahal described Janpath Market as a "dream shopping destination," praising its blend of trendy fashion, handicrafts, and souvenirs—a reflection of Delhi’s cultural and commercial identity.

"This operation, carried out by a team of 10 Safai Sevaks and a supervisor, is part of our structured Night Cleaning Framework," he explained. "It includes scheduled operations, dedicated manpower, advanced equipment, and continuous monitoring. This will not only elevate NDMC’s cleanliness standards but also improve Delhi’s performance in the upcoming Swachhata Survey."

NDMC is the first municipal body in Delhi to implement such an intensive night cleaning operation in its marketplaces, setting a benchmark for other civic agencies. The deployment of additional sanitation staff is aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and consistency in the city’s cleanliness efforts.

Shri Chahal also urged residents, traders, and visitors to embrace cleanliness as a shared civic responsibility: “A clean New Delhi requires collective effort. Let’s come together to build a Viksit, Swachh, and Smart Capital.”

In conclusion, Shri Chahal reiterated NDMC’s unwavering commitment to realizing the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 by fostering sustainable, inclusive, and high-quality urban environments.

“We are dedicated to transforming NDMC into a model of urban excellence—where clean, smart, and citizen-friendly services elevate the quality of life for all," he added.

The Janpath Market Traders' Association expressed their gratitude to NDMC for this initiative, noting the improvements in both the shopping experience and the work environment.
