The "Gorkha Regiment" was established by the British government in Subathu, Himachal Pradesh on 24 April 1815 with the Gorkha Rifles Battalion. This battalion is now known as the Gorkha Rifles, which is an important military force of the Indian Army today. It is a Gorkha infantry regiment, which mainly consists of 70 percent Gorkha soldiers of Nepali origin.
It was originally formed in the year 1815 as part of the British Indian Army. But which later adopted the title of the Gorkha Rifles (Malaun Regiment) of the first King George V himself. After the independence of India in the year 1947, it was transferred to the Indian Army. In 1950 when India became a republic, it was named Gorkha Rifles (Malaun Regiment).

Famous for unmatched bravery
The Gorkha Regiment waved the flag of its bravery from the very beginning and also gave them victory in important wars of the British. In this, Gorkhas were involved in the suppression of the Indian freedom struggle of 1857 along with the Sikh war, Anglo-Sikh war and Afghan wars. Some part of this regiment later joined the British army. Even now the Gorkha regiment is an important part of the British army.
Gorkha regiment divided after independence
When India became independent in 1947, a tripartite agreement was signed between India, Nepal and Britain, under which six Gorkha regiments were transferred to the Indian army. After this, a seventh regiment was formed later, then these seven Gorkha regiments were flying their flag in the Indian army.
There are centers of the Gorkha regiment in many cities in India. Among these, the training centers of Varanasi, Lucknow, Subatu in Himachal Pradesh and Shillong are famous. Gorkha regiment is generally considered to be an expert in fighting in mountainous areas. Gorakhpur is a big center for recruitment of Gorkha regiment, but apart from India, Nepal and Britain, there is a Gorkha regiment in some form or the other in Brunei and Singapore.
‘Jai Mahakali- Ayo Gorkhali’ is the slogan
The identity of Gorkha is Khukri, which is a kind of sharp dagger. During the war, Gorkhas used this Khukri to cut the head of the enemy. Whenever Gorkha soldiers move forward to attack the enemy, this slogan is on their tongue- ‘Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali’. It is said that Gorkhas do not move forward leaving their soldiers trapped in trouble.
