CAG Re-elected as WHO External Auditor with Overwhelming Majority

Geneva- In a resounding victory, Mr. Girish Chandra Murmu, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), has been re-elected as the External Auditor of the World Health Organization (WHO). The announcement came at the Seventy-sixth World Health Assembly held today in Geneva, where Mr. Murmu secured an overwhelming majority, receiving 114 out of 156 votes in the first round of voting.

 

Mr. Murmu has held this esteemed position at WHO since 2019, and his re-election extends his tenure for a four-year term from 2024 to 2027. His presence at the meeting added a personal touch to the proceedings.

 

In his address to the World Health Assembly following the election, Shri Murmu outlined his vision for his role as the external auditor, emphasizing the importance of process improvement to yield better outcomes, promoting transparency, and maintaining a professional approach throughout his tenure.

 

The re-election of CAG Mr. Girish Chandra Murmu reflects not only his own professional standing but also India's standing among the international community. It underscores the professionalism, high audit standards, global audit experience, and strong national credentials of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

 

This remarkable achievement was made possible through the sustained support and tireless efforts of the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations at Geneva, along with his officers and a dedicated team of handpicked officers from CAG.

 

Notably, this is the second significant international audit assignment for CAG Mr. Murmu this year. In March 2023, he was selected as the External Auditor for the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva for the term 2024-2027.

 

Aside from his role at WHO and ILO, Mr. Murmu currently serves as the External Auditor for various other international organizations, further highlighting his global reach and influence. These appointments include the Food and Agriculture Organization (2020-2025), International Atomic Energy Agency (2022-2027), Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (2021-2023), and Inter-Parliamentary Union (2020-2022). Additionally, CAG Mr. Girish Chandra Murmu holds the esteemed position of being a Member of the United Nations Panel of External Auditors. Furthermore, he actively contributes to the governing bodies of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) and the Asian Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI). He also chairs the INTOSAI Knowledge Sharing Committee, its Working Group on IT Audit, and the Compliance Audit Sub-Committee.
