The spirits are flowing freely in Gurugram, as liquor consumption in the east and west zones reaches unprecedented levels, totaling a staggering Rs 1,518 crore over the last six months, according to officials from the Gurugram Excise Department.
Startling data indicates a monthly expenditure of Rs 300 crore on liquor and beer in the district, showcasing a remarkable 20 percent surge compared to the same period last year. Amit Bhatia, Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner, West, attributes this surge to various factors, including increased social acceptability and an upswing in the standard of living among consumers.
"The growth in revenue is multifaceted, with higher social acceptability and an overall improvement in the standard of living contributing to a positive impact on liquor sales," said Bhatia during a media briefing.
Gurugram district, divided into four zones, experienced heightened competition in the recent auction following the revocation of Delhi's new excise policy. The surge in customer demand led to a fierce bidding war, causing license fees in zones to skyrocket by more than 50 percent.
As the district revels in its spirited enthusiasm, the dynamics of the liquor landscape continue to evolve, raising questions about the social, economic, and regulatory aspects surrounding this surge in cons
umption.
