International Crimes Tribunal Issues Arrest Warrant Against Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina for Alleged Crimes Against Humanity

The biggest news is coming out of Bangladesh at this time. The International Crimes Tribunal has issued an arrest warrant against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for alleged crimes against humanity during the recent widespread movement of students. In this case, apart from Hasina, arrest warrants were issued against 45 people including other top Awami League leaders on Thursday. As soon as this news reached, there was a stir in Hasina's camp.

Quoting Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, 'Daily Star' reported in its news that the tribunal headed by Tribunal Chairman Justice Mohammad Ghulam Murtaza Majumdar passed this order. The prosecution had filed two petitions in the tribunal in this regard and appealed to issue an arrest warrant against them.

It is being told that in this case the tribunal also directed the concerned officials to arrest Hasina and 46 others by November 18 and produce them before it.

In August, Bangladesh's interim government said it would prosecute those involved in the killings during a recent massive student movement against the Hasina-led government at the International Crimes Tribunal. More than 230 people were killed in the violence that erupted in Bangladesh after the Hasina government was ousted from power. In July, students staged massive protests against the controversial reservation system in government jobs.
