Bangladesh Under Military Rule: Army Chief Takes Command After Sheikh Hasina's Resignation

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina first resigned and then left the country. There are speculations that Sheikh Hasina may come to India. However, several media reports are claiming that she may go to London via India. The command of Bangladesh is now in the hands of the army.

When the country is ruled by the army, all decisions related to the post of PM are taken by the army chief. Currently, General Waqar-uz-Zaman is the Army Chief in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman held a press conference after Sheikh Hasina's resignation. He said, “We will fulfil your demand. We will bring peace back to the country. We will run this country by an interim government.”

General Waqar-uz-Zaman told the protesters, “Stay away from vandalism, arson and fighting. If you join us, things will improve. Fighting violence will not get anything. Stay away from conflict and chaos."

This is not the first time military rule in Bangladesh. Earlier, in 1975, the army seized power there. At that time, the country was under the government of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the father of Sheikh Hasina. During the period when the army seized power in the country, the army ruled Bangladesh for about 15 years.

It is said that after the Supreme Court in Bangladesh abolished reservation, people there took to the streets. Pressure was put on the government to restore reservation, but it did not. Elections were then held in Bangladesh and opposition parties boycotted the elections. Since then, there has been speculation that the army could take power in Bangladesh.
