Kamal Nath was born on November 18, 1946, in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, into a prominent political family. His father, Mahendra Nath, was a freedom fighter and Congress leader.

He completed his schooling from The Doon School in Dehradun and later attended St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, and the University of Delhi.
