Dinesh Karthik was born on June 1, 1985, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
He comes from a family with a cricketing background. His father, Krishnakumar, was a first-division cricketer, and his mother, Padma, was a state-level athlete.
He made his international debut for India in September 2004 in an ODI against England. His Test debut came in November 2004 against Australia.
