Pinarayi Vijayan was born on May 24, 1945, in Pinarayi, a village in the Kannur district of Kerala. He comes from a modest background and is the youngest of 14 siblings.
Vijayan completed his pre-university course at the Government Brennen College in Thalassery. He then earned a degree in economics from the same institution, which was instrumental in shaping his political views.
Vijayan began his political journey as a student leader in the late 1960s, becoming actively involved in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and participating in various student movements.
He rose through the ranks of the CPI(M), serving as the Kannur district secretary and later becoming a member of the CPI(M) state secretariat. His leadership skills were evident early in his career.
Pinarayi Vijayan was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1970. Over the years, he has represented various constituencies, including Kuthuparamba and Dharmadom.
From 1996 to 1998, Vijayan served as the Minister of Electricity and Co-operatives in the E.K. Nayanar-led Kerala government. During his tenure, he initiated significant reforms in the power sector, improving the state's electricity infrastructure.
In 1998, Vijayan was appointed the state secretary of the CPI(M) in Kerala, a position he held until 2015. His tenure saw the strengthening of the party's grassroots organization.
Pinarayi Vijayan became the Chief Minister of Kerala for the first time on May 25, 2016. His administration focused on social welfare, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.
Vijayan's leadership was tested during the devastating floods in Kerala in 2018 and 2019. His government's effective crisis management and rehabilitation efforts received widespread praise.
