The CDS is a four-star military officer, selected from amongst the officers of the Indian Armed Forces. Regarding the appointment of the next CDS, information has been received that the government will form a panel of names of senior commanders of the Army, Air Force and Navy. Based on the recommendations of the three services, this panel will be finalized, which will take two to three days. After this it will be sent to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh for approval. After their approval, these names will be sent to the Cabinet Committee on Appointments for consideration, which will take a final call on the country's next CDS. According to experts, the same protocol will be followed for the appointment of CDS, which is prescribed for the appointment of the chiefs of the three services. The appointment of General Naravane as CDS is more likely on the basis of overall performance, including handling of the standoff in Ladakh. Apart from this, he is the senior-most among the three service chiefs. General Naravane has full potential to become CDS Army Chief General MM Naravane took over as the Chief of Army Staff on December 31, 2019 and is due to retire in April next year.
