Winter Session of Parliament 2024: What Are the Expected Agendas This Time?

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday announced that the winter session of Parliament will begin on November 25 and end on December 20. The minister said that the Hon'ble President, on the recommendation of the Government of India, has approved the proposal to convene both Houses of Parliament for the Winter Session, 2024 from November 25 to December 20, 2024 (subject to the exigencies of parliamentary business). On November 26, 2024 (Constitution Day), on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, the event will be celebrated in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan.

It is expected that the Narendra Modi government will make every effort to ensure that the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill is passed by both the Houses. The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 is holding its meetings regularly in various states with various stakeholders, to resolve their queries and build a consensus on the controversial bill.

The government may also consider bringing the One Nation One Election Bill. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that his government is working towards achieving One Nation One Election which will ensure simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

PM Modi had said, 'We are now working towards One Nation One Election, which will strengthen India's democracy, give optimal outcome of India's resources and the country will get new momentum in achieving the dream of developed India. Today, India is moving towards One Nation One Civil Code. It is a secular civil code.'

The opposition Congress has rejected the idea of implementing One Nation One Election, saying that the PM has to take everyone into confidence in Parliament on this issue. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge rejected the concept of one nation and one election, calling it 'impossible'. Kharge said, 'What PM Modi has said, he will not do it, because when it comes to Parliament, he will have to take everyone into confidence, only then it will happen. This is impossible, 'one nation one election' is impossible.'
