VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital Inaugurates Advanced Stroke Unit, Enhancing Acute Stroke Care
The Department of Neurology at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital has successfully inaugurated its new 8-bed Stroke Unit, marking a significant advancement in acute stroke care for the region. Dr. Vandana Talwar, Medical Superintendent of VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, led the inauguration ceremony, emphasizing the unit's pivotal role in enhancing patient care. She stated, "This Stroke Unit represents a monumental leap in our hospital's capacity to deliver world-class care to stroke patients. It exemplifies our unwavering commitment to healthcare advancement and improved patient outcomes. We are immensely proud to introduce this specialized facility to our community and anticipate its transformative impact on stroke treatment and recovery."
The unit, which includes a 6-bed High Dependency Unit (HDU) and 2 designated Stroke Beds in the Neurology ICU, was officially opened in a ceremony attended by hospital administrators, medical staff, and health officials.
Dr. B. K. Bajaj, Director Professor & Head of Neurology, presided over the inauguration, emphasizing the unit's potential to reduce stroke-related morbidity and mortality. With a focus on reducing complications like aspiration and infections, we aim to significantly improve outcomes for our stroke patients."
The newly established unit is equipped with multiparameter monitors and is staffed by a specialized team including neurologists, dedicated stroke nursing officers, and rehabilitation personnel. This multidisciplinary approach ensures comprehensive care for acute stroke patients from the moment they enter the emergency department through their recovery process.
Dr. Shishir Chandan, CMO & Associate Professor of Neurology, highlighted the enhancement of existing services, saying, "While we have been providing thrombolysis for acute stroke patients, this new facility will undoubtedly elevate our standard of care."

The inauguration of this Stroke Unit positions VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital as one of the few centers in India with a committed, comprehensive acute stroke care facility. As the unit begins operations, it is expected to serve as a model for stroke care in the country, potentially inspiring similar initiatives in other healthcare institutions.
