Raghav Chadha Urges Action Against Misuse of Servant Quarters in Government Residences

Raising concerns over the misuse of servant quarters in government residences, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has called for strict regulatory enforcement to curb illegal rentals and exploitation of domestic workers.

In a letter to the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Chadha pointed out two key issues:

  1. Illegal Renting of Servant Quarters – Some officials rent out servant quarters for personal profit, depriving domestic workers of rightful accommodation.
  2. Exploitation of Domestic Staff – Some employers deduct housing costs from workers’ wages, leaving them financially vulnerable.

“The misuse of these quarters violates workers’ rights and leads to economic distress,” Chadha stated, emphasizing that these quarters were meant to enhance domestic staff’s well-being, not facilitate illegal renting or labor exploitation.

To address the issue, Chadha proposed:

  • Strict enforcement against unauthorized rentals.
  • Regular audits and inspections of servant quarters.
  • Fair wage policies ensuring domestic workers receive both housing and proper salaries.
  • A grievance redressal system for exploited workers.

“Taking these steps will ensure fairness, uphold workers’ dignity, and prevent misuse of government property,” he stated, urging the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to take swift action.

Chadha’s intervention highlights the need for ethical labor practices and accountability in government housing, ensuring servant quarters serve their rightful purpose.
