Punjab Women Commission issues notice to Charanjit Singh Channi for making indecent and derogatory remarks towards women
The Punjab State Women Commission, exercising its powers under Section 10 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, has taken suo moto cognizance and issued a notice to former Punjab Chief Minister and current Lok Sabha member Charanjit Singh Channi. The notice pertains to allegations of making vulgar and derogatory remarks about women while addressing an election rally in the Gidderbaha constituency.
The Commission, exercising its powers regarding cases related to the violation of women's rights, dignity, and security, has summoned Charanjit Singh Channi to appear in person on November 19, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Punjab State Women Commission office located at SCO No. 5, 1st Floor, Phase-1, SAS Nagar (Mohali). He has been asked to provide a detailed explanation regarding the allegations.
According to the information received, Charanjit Singh Channi was campaigning for Congress candidate Amrita Vading in Gidderbaha. During this, he has made a controversial statement by targeting BJP and AAP, citing the example of a woman. It is being said that women were also present in the rally when he gave his statement. At the same time, it is being said that BJP and AAP leaders have raised questions about the statement given by Channi in the election rally. They say that Channi has insulted women. Regarding this matter, AAP and BJP have demanded the Women's Commission to take action against Channi. At the same time, Women's Commission Raj Lali Gill has taken cognizance of this and issued a notice to Channi.
The Women's Commission said that Channi's video has gone viral, everyone has seen it. He said that Channi's perception of making wrong comments about women is not of today but is very old. He said that Channi had once touched a woman in the wrong place. Sometimes he touches a woman's cheek in a public place and apologizes. He said that now Channi, who went to campaign in favor of Amrita in Gidderbaha, has given examples of making wrong comments about women, the Pandit community and the Jat community. He said that how Channi, who has such thinking, has held the post of CM. He said that the vocabulary used is very condemnable. The Women's Commission said that Amrita Vading tolerated the indecent remarks made by Channi for votes. He said that being a woman if Amrita had stopped Channi, everyone would have praised her.
