Paris Olympics 2024: Manika Batra Creates History as First Indian Table Tennis Player to Reach Olympic Singles Pre-Quarterfinals
Paris Olympics, July 29: Renowned table tennis player Manika Batra has created history by becoming the first Indian table tennis player to reach the singles pre-quarterfinals at the Olympic Games. The 29-year-old won against world number 18 Prithika Pavade with a score of 4-0.
Manika's victory over Pavade, who has Indian roots, came with scores of 11-9, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-7. This match is one of the best performances by an Indian table tennis player in Olympic history.
Previously, Manika had reached the round of 32 at the Tokyo Olympics. This new achievement marks a significant improvement and is a proud moment for India.
Manika, born on June 15, 1995, in Naraina Vihar, Delhi, began playing table tennis at the age of four. She is currently the top female table tennis player in India and ranks world number 24 as of May 2024. Known for her unique style, she is one of the few female players who uses a long pimple rubber. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to sports, she was awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2020.
