Omar Abdullah Elected as Leader of NC Legislature Party, Set to Become Jammu & Kashmir's Chief Minister as Congress-NC Alliance Secures Majority

The results of the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have been announced. After the Congress and National Conference alliance crossed the majority mark in the counting of votes held on October 8, the process of forming a new government in the state began. In the meeting of the legislative parties on Thursday, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah was elected the leader of the legislative party, with this the path to his becoming the Chief Minister has also been cleared. Immediately after the election results were announced, National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah had announced that Omar Abdullah would be the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Now his claim has been confirmed, although the date for the oath-taking of the CM post has not been revealed yet.

After being elected the leader of the legislative party, Omar Abdullah thanked the National Conference (NC) MLAs for choosing him as their leader. Talking to media persons, he said, 'You all are aware of the decision that has been taken. The NC Legislature Party meeting was held, the Legislature Party has decided its leader and I am deeply grateful to the party MLAs for reposing their faith in me and allowing me to stake claim to form the government.' He said that four out of seven independent MLAs have supported the party, due to which the party's number in the assembly has increased to 46.

According to the PTI report, Omar Abdullah said, 'Talks are going on with the Congress. They have been given one day to decide. As soon as they give us the letter of support, I will stake claim to form the government.' NC has emerged as the largest party in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, the party has won 42 seats. At the same time, with its allies - Congress and the Marxist Communist Party (CPI-M), it has easily reached the majority figure in the assembly. Congress has got six seats and CPI-M has got one seat. Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections were held in three phases on 18 September, 25 September and 1 October. The counting of votes took place on October 8.
