Manipur Violence: Protesters Enter Residences of Two Ministers and Three MLAs in Imphal Over Jiribam Deaths

Amid the violence in Manipur, on Saturday a group of protesters entered the residences of two ministers and three MLAs in Imphal. These people were demanding justice in connection with the death of three people in the Jiribam district. After the mob entered the houses of the MLAs, the Imphal West (district) administration had to impose indefinite prohibitory orders in the district. Imphal West District Magistrate T Kiran Kumar issued an order and imposed curfew at 4:30 pm on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has given clear instructions to the security forces deployed in Manipur to adopt a strict attitude against the miscreants.

A senior official said that the mob entered the residence of Health and Family Welfare Minister Sapam Ranjan in Lamfel Sanakethel area. Lamfel Sanakithel Development Authority representative David told reporters, "Sapam assured us that the issues related to the death of three people will be discussed in the cabinet meeting and if the government fails to respect the sentiments of the public, the minister will tender his resignation."

Another senior official said that the protesters also entered the house of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister L Susindro Singh. In the Sagolband area of Imphal West district, the protesters gathered in front of the residence of BJP MLA RK Imo and raised slogans. Imo is also the son-in-law of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The protesters demanded appropriate action from the government on the death of three people and appealed to the officials to 'arrest the culprits within 24 hours'.

A senior official said that the protesters on Tiddim Road reached the residence of the independent MLA of Keshamthong, Sapam Nishikant Singh, to meet him but when they were told that the MLA was not in the state, they targeted the office building of a local newspaper owned by him. He said that three bodies were recovered near the confluence of the Jiri and Barak rivers on the Manipur-Assam border on Friday night. It is suspected that these three bodies are the bodies of three of the six people who went missing from Jiribam district. The bodies of a woman and two children were found about 16 km from Borobekra in Jiribam district. Six people went missing from a place near Borobekra on Monday.
