Lok Sabha confirms President’s Rule in Manipur amid political crisis

The Lok Sabha passed a constitutional resolution confirming the President's rule in Manipur late on Wednesday (April 2). It is worth noting that the President's rule was imposed in violence-hit Manipur on February 13. In line with a Supreme Court decision, Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented this constitutional resolution in the Lok Sabha to confirm the President's rule within two months.
Home Minister Amit Shah told the House that Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had resigned from his post, after which the Governor consulted the MLAs. During the discussion, the majority of MLAs made it clear that they were not in a position to form the government. Because of this, the Union Cabinet recommended President's rule, which was accepted by President Draupadi Murmu.
Amit Shah said, "In line with the Supreme Court's decision, I am presenting this constitutional resolution for the approval of the House within two months." He further said that the priority of the central government is to restore peace in Manipur. He also mentioned that no one has died in the state in the last four months and only two people have been injured.
The Home Minister appealed to the opposition parties to avoid doing politics on the situation in Manipur. He said that the government wants to restore peace in Manipur as soon as possible, ensure rehabilitation and provide relief to the victims.
It is worth noting that after the violence that continued in Manipur for the last 21 months, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post on February 9. He submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal.
