Kolkata’s Protesting Doctors Appeal to President Murmu for Justice in Rape-Murder Case, Seek Safe Working Conditions

Junior doctors have been protesting for 35 days against the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. There is no consensus between the doctors and the Bengal government regarding their demands. Therefore, their protest is also continuing. On Thursday, CM Mamata Banerjee called the doctors for talks for the third time. But the doctors insisted on live streaming the meeting. So the meeting could not take place. After this, Mamata Banerjee held a press conference and said that she is ready to resign.

Meanwhile, the protesting doctors have written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and appealed to them to intervene in this matter.

The doctors have written a 4-page letter to President Murmu and PM Modi. The letter has also been copied to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Health Minister JP Nadda.

In the letter, the doctors wrote, "We humbly place the issues before your esteemed excellency, as the head of state, so that our unfortunate colleague who has been the victim of the most despicable crime shall receive justice, and so that we, the healthcare professionals under the West Bengal Health department, may be able to discharge our duties to the public without fear and apprehension.”

West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant had called the protesting doctors for a meeting at the state secretariat at 5 pm on Thursday. The doctors reached here at 5:25 pm. The government had approved a delegation of 15 doctors for the meeting. However, there were 30 members in the delegation. The doctors remained adamant on the demand to telecast the meeting live. Therefore, the meeting could not take place.
