Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Protesting Doctors Agree to Meet CM Mamata Banerjee After Skipping Initial Talks
Doctors angry over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital are continuing their agitation even two days after the Supreme Court's reprimand. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee invited a team of agitating doctors for talks, which they turned down.
Reportedly, on Tuesday, CM Mamata Banerjee waited for the doctors for an hour, but they did not come. Now a day later, i.e. on Wednesday, the protesting doctors have agreed to discuss with Mamata Banerjee. The protesting doctors have been invited for a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at 6 pm today.
A letter from Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has suggested that the delegation of doctors meeting the Chief Minister will include 12-15 members. It is worth noting that on the night of August 9, a 31-year-old trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital. This incident enraged the medical staff across the country and the protest of doctors continues even today outside the Health Secretariat, Swasthya Bhavan of West Bengal. Their demands include action against the rape-murder convicts, action against those involved in the alleged cover-up, and resignation of top officials including the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the Health Secretary.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had asked the doctors protesting in Kolkata to end their agitation and return to work. However, the doctors continued their agitation even after the court's deadline ended on Tuesday and also refused to talk to CM Mamata.
Now a day later, doctors' representative Dr. Aniket Mandal said that he has come to know from media reports that the Chief Minister is ready to meet them. He said, 'To make it clear, we will send a mail to the CM's office and put forth our demands. We want to talk to the Chief Minister.' Let us tell you that in the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor, the CBI has arrested an accused of Sanjay Roy, who has already turned back from his statement.
