Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: CM Mamata Banerjee Writes to PM Modi, Demands Strict Laws and Punishments for Offenders

After the uproar over the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Hospital, now West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written an important letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and made a big demand. The news agency has quoted a senior official as saying that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding strict laws along with punishment for the rape offenders.

Alapan Bandopadhyay, Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, has given this information in a press conference. Trinamool Congress supremo Banerjee has written this letter after nationwide protests over the rape and murder of a female doctor at Kolkata's government RG Kar Medical College Hospital earlier this month.

Noting the regular occurrence of rape cases across the country, CM Mamata Banerjee has written in the letter that according to available data, about 90 rape cases occur daily. In many cases, rape victims are also murdered.

The CBI on Thursday brought the accused to Sealdah Court for a polygraph test and application for a statement before the magistrate. In a polygraph test, it is necessary to obtain the consent of both the judge and the person who is to undergo the polygraph test. The case for the polygraph test of accused Sanjay Roy is also in the court, on which the decision is to be given tomorrow.

She has written in the letter that, 'It is horrifying to see this trend of criminals. It shakes the confidence and conscience of society and the nation, it is our duty to end it so that women feel safe. Such a serious and sensitive issue needs to be addressed comprehensively through a stringent central law that provides such punishment for those involved in these brutal crimes that it becomes an example for others.'

Mamata Banerjee also proposed the establishment of a fast-track special court for speedy trials in these cases. She suggested, 'The hearing should be completed within a maximum of 15 days to ensure speedy justice.'




The body of a 31-year-old trainee female doctor was recovered from Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 9. The doctor had injury marks on her body and was bleeding. Investigation revealed that the doctor was raped and then murdered. Police have arrested the accused Sanjay Roy and sent him to jail. The incident caused resentment among the doctors and they went on strike. The Kolkata High Court transferred the investigation of the case from the police to the CBI. The CBI has been investigating the case for 8 days.
