How Many Foreign Tourists Visited India Last Year? Government Informs Lok Sabha
Every year a large number of foreign tourists come to India to travel or celebrate holidays. Due to this, the contribution of the tourism sector is also seen in India's GDP. In this sequence, on Monday, the Central Government informed the Lok Sabha that the total number of foreign tourists coming to India in the year 2023 was 95.2 lakh. With this, the contribution of the tourism sector to the country's GDP for the year 2022-23 has been five percent.
Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has given information about the tourism sector in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. Shekhawat said that among the total foreign tourists, the number of tourists traveling for holidays and entertainment was 46.2 percent. At the same time, the share of Indian immigrants was 26.9 percent. Apart from this, business and professionals were 10.3 percent, medical 6.9 percent, students 0.5 percent and others (including unknown) 9.2 percent.
The tourism minister said that the contribution of the tourism sector to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 5.01 percent in the year 2018-19, while this figure was five percent in 2022-23. The Ministry of Tourism has taken steps to revive the tourism industry in India, such as improving the quality of infrastructure and facilities at tourist destinations and increasing connectivity and access to tourist destinations.
India is becoming one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world. To get a global reach in the tourism sector, India has set a target of a tourism economy of US$ 3 trillion by 2047. In the year 2022, 14.3 million foreign tourists visited India and this generated revenue of $ 17.6 billion.
