Amritpal Singh's seven aides to be brought to Punjab from Assam jail, NSA detention will not be extended

Punjab Police will bring back seven associates of MP and radical pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh, who is lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam, as the state government has decided not to extend their detention period under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

The official said that these seven people lodged in Dibrugarh jail will have to face legal action in connection with the attack on Ajnala police station in 2023. He said that the detention period of these seven people is about to end and the state government has decided not to extend their detention under NSA.

Amritpal, the head of the 'Waris Punjab De' organization, and his nine associates have been in Dibrugarh jail in Assam under NSA for the last two years. Amritpal contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent and won from the Khadoor Sahib seat.

Amritpal's associates who will be brought back to Punjab include Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh Bajekhana, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwal, Daljit Singh Kalsi, Gurinderpal Singh Guri Aujla, Harjeet Singh and Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range Amritsar) Satinder Singh said the police will further investigate the 2023 attack on Ajnala police station. He said the 10 people detained under the NSA have not yet been formally arrested in connection with the attack on the Ajnala police station.

Singh told reporters in Amritsar, "We are further investigating the matter. We will arrest seven people named in FIR No. 39 and bring them back to Punjab."

However, Singh refused to comment on questions related to Amritpal. Last year, the detention of Amritpal and his nine associates under the NSA was extended for a year. Amritpal was arrested from Rode village in Moga on 23 April 2023 after a search of more than a month.
