India Reports 7000+ Daily Covid Cases, Kerala Is the Hotbed of Omicron Currently

India reported 7000+ cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours even as the newly mutated Omicron variant spread like wild fire everywhere else in the world as well. While India is taking measures regarding travel restrictions and more stringent testing of its population, major states like Maharashtra (32), Delhi (22) and Rajasthan (17) continue to report maximum number of cases with other states like Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal also reporting cases. So far, 91 countries in the world have detected Omicron variant. With Omicron having spread to 11 states across the country, the Union Health Ministry reported that Kerala has so far contributed 40.31% to the total number of active cases, making it the hotbed of Omicron currently. There is every possibility that the new strain will outpace the Delta virus, which struck during the second wave in April 2021 and claimed more than 2.5 lakh lives. The media even termed it as "the worst tragedy since Partition." Lav Agrawal, Joint Secretary to Union Health Ministry, said on Friday, "Omicron variant has been reported in 91 countries in the world. WHO has said that Omicron is spreading faster than the Delta variant in South Africa where Delta circulation was low. It is likely Omicron with outpace Delta variant where community transmission occurs." Dr. Balram Bhargava, Director-General of ICMR, has also cautioned the public against any non-essential gathering or travel. He said, "This is the time to avoid non-essential travel, mass gatherings and it is very important to observe low-intensity festivities."
