Shabana Azmi's inspiring story: Once sold coffee at petrol pump, tried to commit suicide; But she became a National Award winner

Very few people know that veteran actress Shabana Azmi, who made her debut with the film 'Ankur' in 1974, also had a life full of struggles. Before entering the film industry, she used to sell coffee at a petrol station. But his hard work and dedication took him to the heights of success. From selling coffee to becoming a national award winner, Shabana Azmi has come a long way. Born in Hyderabad, Shabana Azmi is the daughter of renowned poet Kaifi Azmi and veteran actress Shaukat Azmi. She completed her schooling from Queen Mary School, Mumbai and studied Psychology at St. Xavier's College. She later took admission in the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune to learn acting.

Shabana Azmi's mother Shaukat passed away in 2019. Shabana's mother had revealed in her autobiography 'Caff and I: A Memoir' how her daughter used to sell coffee at petrol pumps to earn Rs 30 despite being from a well-to-do family. She wanted to help her family financially during her college years.

As a child, Shabana Azmi had tried to commit suicide twice. Her mother Shaukat had also revealed in her autobiography about the incident that Shabana Azmi once drank copper sulphate in the school lab. She was rescued by his friend at the time. The actress had taken such a big step because she felt her mother loved her little brother more, so in anger she tried to take her own life. For the second time, Shabana had tried to commit suicide in front of the train after being scolded by her mother. However, by the grace of God, he was saved by the school janitor.
