Government to Establish Centres of Excellence for Green Hydrogen Research and Development

In a major step towards advancing Green Hydrogen technologies, the Government of India has issued a call for proposals to establish Centres of Excellence (CoEs) under the National Green Hydrogen Mission's Research and Development (R&D) Scheme.

Announced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on November 4, 2024, this initiative aims to foster integrated research across the Green Hydrogen value chain, promoting innovation, sustainability, and energy independence.

The CoEs will drive India’s transition to a low-carbon economy by focusing on cutting-edge advancements in Green Hydrogen production, storage, and utilization. These centers are set to act as hubs for research, skill development, and knowledge sharing, and will facilitate collaboration between industry, academia, and government stakeholders. This collaborative approach is expected to enhance process efficiencies, enable new product development, and advance India’s Green Hydrogen ecosystem.

Earlier, in March 2024, MNRE had released guidelines for the R&D Scheme to ensure cohesive efforts under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which was launched in January 2023 with a budget of Rs. 19,744 crores extending through FY 2029-30. A budget of Rs. 100 crores has been allocated specifically for setting up CoEs, encouraging partnerships between public and private entities, research institutions, and universities to submit proposals.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission will accelerate India's journey toward a self-reliant, decarbonized economy while positioning India as a leader in global Green Hydrogen technology.
