Ratan Tata's Vision: The Birth and Journey of Tata Nano, India's 'Lakhtakiya Car'
How Ratan Tata's Revolutionary Dream Car Aimed to Empower Middle-Class Families but Fell Short of Expectations
Ratan Tata always worked continuously to make the lives of the common people of India easier. In this direction, he also thought about those middle-class families who dreamt of buying a car but could not afford it. This idea resulted in the birth of Tata Nano, which was called the "Lakhtakiya Car" because its starting price was only one lakh rupees.
This was a revolutionary initiative, which created new hope and curiosity across the country. Nano aimed to make the facility of a car accessible to every Indian family, and Ratan Tata made it a reality. This car opened a new chapter for the Indian middle class, who could never even think of buying their car earlier.
This vision of Ratan Tata not only established him as a great entrepreneur but also proved that the purpose of true leadership is to work for the betterment of society and not just to earn business profits.
When did Tata Nano launch?
Tata Nano was Ratan Tata's dream car. In the year 2008, Ratan Tata introduced the lakhtakaiya car Tata Nano to the world. This dream project of Ratan Tata aimed to make a cheap car for the common people. Tata Nano was launched in the year 2009.
Why did Tata Nano fail in business?
The sale of Nano stopped in the year 2019. You must be wondering what is the reason for the failure of Tata Nano, so let us tell you that the mentality of people in general in India is such that cheap things are not good. The same happened with Tata Nano and Nano did not sell as Ratan Tata had expected and eventually its production was stopped. The failure of Tata Nano was like a pang in Ratan Tata's heart till the last moment.
How did Ratan Tata express about Tata Nano?
Ratan Tata wrote an emotional post remembering Tata Nano in May 2022. In his Instagram post, he wrote that I often used to see people going on scooters with their families, where children were seen sitting somehow between their father and mother. It seemed as if they were sandwiches. I got inspiration from this to make a car for these people. Having studied in architecture school, I had the advantage of making doodles.
Ratan Tata further writes- While making doodles in my free time, I made a doodle of a car, which looked like a buggy and did not even have doors. After this, I thought that I should make a car for such people and then Tata Nano came into existence, which was for our common people. Our people mean those people of the country, who dream of a car, but are not able to buy one. In this way, Tata Nano was launched in the later years, but could not create the kind of success story, with which Ratan Tata had tried to bring it.
