Meet Preeti Sudan - Newly Appointed Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission

1983-batch IAS officer to take charge on August 1, filling vacancy left by Manoj Soni's resignation amid trainee controversy

Preeti Sudan, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1983 batch, has been named by the government to lead the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The date of her appointment is August 1, 2024. Following the resignation of former UPSC chairman Manoj Soni due to the issue surrounding trainee IAS officer Pooja Khedkar, this job fell vacant.

In 2022, Preeti Sudan, a former Health Secretary, became a member of the UPSC. She is an Andhra Pradesh cadre IAS official who has served in a number of important capacities across her career, most notably as Secretary of the Department of Food Processing and Public Distribution. She has also held positions in the Ministry of Defense and the Department of Women and Child Development. Important government programmes include the Ayushman Bharat scheme, Beti Bachao, and Beti Padhao campaigns have involved Sudan significantly.

Sudan will hold the position of UPSC chairman till April 2025. Her ability to lead the commission is demonstrated by her vast experience in public service and her contributions to significant government initiatives.
