Formation of Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for Waqf Bill 2024 Amid Opposition Uproar
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju Announces 31-Member JPC from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha; Opposition Voices Strong Concerns Over Bill's Impact
Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf Bill 2024 in the Lok Sabha a day earlier. Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, opposed the bill, calling it anti-Muslim. Amidst the objection and strong opposition of the opposition, this bill was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) in the Lok Sabha without any discussion.
Speaker Om Birla had said that a JPC will be formed soon regarding this. Now the names of 11 members of the JPC have come out regarding this. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju named the 21 members of the JPC in the Lok Sabha. Kiren Rijiju said that in this 31-member JPC, 21 members will be from the Lok Sabha and 10 members from the Rajya Sabha.
Kiren Rijiju said that the JPC will submit its report on the Waqf Bill on the last day of the first week of the next session. He also named the 21 members of the Lok Sabha who are proposed to be included in the JPC. After the name came out, Congress MP K Suresh demanded the inclusion of NK Premachandran in the JPC.
