Forgotten Hero of Ram Temple Movement: K.K. Nair's Defiance Against Nehru's Diktat

Ayodhya: As the consecration of Lord Ram in the Ram Temple's sanctum sanctorum draws closer on January 22, 2024, a forgotten hero of the movement deserves recognition: K.K. Nair, the District Magistrate of Faizabad who defied Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's order to remove idols from the disputed site in 1949.

Nair's story is one of courage, conviction, and a commitment to religious freedom. Born in Kerala and educated in England, he joined the Indian Civil Service (ICS) and became the District Magistrate of Faizabad just months before the fateful night of December 22-23, 1949. This was when idols of Lord Ram mysteriously appeared inside the Babri Masjid, igniting a movement that would change the course of Indian history.

Facing pressure from both sides, Nair chose to stand by the principles of peace and respect for religious sentiments. When Nehru ordered the removal of the idols, fearing communal unrest, Nair refused to comply. In a bold move, he wrote to the government, "Remove me before the idols." This act of defiance resonated throughout the country, highlighting the potential for violence if the order were carried out.

Nair's stand forced the government to reconsider. He proposed the construction of a grand temple on the disputed site, acknowledging the deep-seated belief of Hindus who consider Ayodhya as Lord Ram's birthplace. While the order for idol removal was ultimately withdrawn, Nair faced repercussions for his defiance. He was suspended from service, though later reinstated.

His legacy extends beyond his administrative career. Nair retired in 1952 and entered politics, becoming a symbol of Hindu identity. He and his wife, Shakuntala Nair, contested and won seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, further solidifying their roles as champions of the Ram Temple movement.

K.K. Nair's story is a reminder that history is not only shaped by powerful figures but also by individuals who stand up for what they believe in, even in the face of adversity.
