Delhi AIIMS Doctors End 11-Day Strike After Supreme Court Assurance in Kolkata Trainee Doctor's Murder Case
Nationwide Protests Sparked by Brutal Murder at RG Kar Medical College; CJI Appeals for Doctors to Return to Work
The anger of the medical staff across the country over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, is not subsiding. The case is now being heard in the Supreme Court, on Thursday Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud appealed to the doctors to end the strike and return to work. The CJI also assured the striking doctors that if they return to work, no action will be taken against them. Shortly after this assurance from the Supreme Court, the doctors of Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) announced the end of their 11-day strike.
According to a PTI report, earlier in the day, the Supreme Court had asked the protesting doctors to resume work and assured them that no adverse action would be taken against them after returning to work. AIIMS Resident Doctors Association posted on 'X', 'We are returning to work after the appeal and assurance of the Supreme Court and its intervention in the matter of RG Kar (Hospital) incident and safety of doctors. We appreciate the action of the court and call for compliance with its directions. Taking care of patients remains our top priority.'
On August 12, the 'Doctors Association' started a nationwide protest due to which the OPD services came to a standstill. However, emergency services continued to run. The brutal attack and murder of the doctor in Kolkata had sparked outrage across the country.
The body of the doctor was found in the seminar room of the chest department of this government (RG Kar) hospital in West Bengal on August 9 and there were deep injury marks on the dead body. The next day, a volunteer Sanjay Rai was arrested by the Kolkata Police in this case. Many shocking revelations have also come to light about the accused Sanjay Rai. He has been married four times and all the wives either divorced him or left him.
