By-Elections Scheduled for Six Rajya Sabha Seats on December 20
Election Commission Announces Polls to Fill Vacancies in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Haryana; Congress and BJP Shine in Recent By-Elections
The Election Commission on Tuesday said that by-elections will be held on December 20 to fill six vacant Rajya Sabha seats in four states. Of these, three seats are from Andhra Pradesh and one each from Odisha, West Bengal and Haryana.
The vacancies in the Rajya Sabha include the seat vacated by Venkataraman Rao, who resigned in August this year, Bidha Mastan Rao, who also resigned in August, and Raiga Krishnaiah, who resigned in September.
Venkataraman Rao's term from Andhra Pradesh will end in June 2026, while Mastan Rai and Krishnaiah's term from Andhra Pradesh will end in June 2028. Sujit Kumar, who resigned in September, will end his term in April 2026. Kumar was a Rajya Sabha member from Odisha.
On Saturday, the Election Commission announced the results of by-elections to 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats in 15 states. The BJP and its allies won most of the seats, while the Congress emerged victorious in both Wayanad in Kerala and Nanded in Maharashtra.
In the assembly and by-elections, the BJP and its allies won the most seats in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) claimed all six seats in West Bengal, while the Congress won a total of seven seats, including all three assembly seats in Karnataka.
