The Bihar government has taken a major initiative to connect villages to cities and strengthen rural infrastructure. Under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's ambitious 'Mukhyamantri Gramin Setu Yojana', preparations have been made to build 700 new bridges in the financial year 2025-26. About Rs 3000 crore will be spent on this scheme, which will provide permanent and safe road connectivity to thousands of villages in the state.

This scheme was approved in September 2024 and is now being implemented rapidly. Its purpose is to create seamless connectivity in rural areas, where even today movement is disrupted due to rain, floods or old dilapidated bridges.

Old bridges will be newly built

Under the scheme, not only new and strong bridges will be built in place of old and dilapidated bridges. But work will also be done in those areas where the road is incomplete due to missing bridges till date. Also, bridges damaged by floods or other natural disasters will be re-erected. The bridges which are already built but do not have approach roads will also be constructed. So that people do not face any problem in commuting and the utility of these unused bridges can be proved.

Public demands given priority

This scheme is also special because the voice of the general public has been given priority in it. The proposals received in the 'Janta Ke Darbar Mein Mukhyamantri' program and the public announcements made by the Chief Minister, both have been included in this scheme. That is, this scheme is not just a departmental initiative, but a scheme made with public participation.

14 bridges have been approved

At present, 14 bridges have received administrative approval under the scheme, on which Rs 117.64 crore will be spent. The recommended proposals are being reviewed from the level of District Steering Committees from all the districts. Soon the remaining projects will also be approved.

The condition of villages will change

The government says that this scheme is not just the construction of bridges, but is the foundation stone of the social and economic development of villages. Farmers will find it easier to transport their produce to the market, children will find it safe and comfortable to go to school and people will have access to treatment in case of an emergency
