Bihar Government Mandates Registration of Unregistered Temples and Monasteries

Law Minister Nitin Naveen Instructs District Magistrates to Submit Property Details to State Religious Trust Board

The temples, monasteries and trusts operating in Bihar without registration, now will be registered. The Bihar government has issued instructions to the District Magistrates of all the districts of the state to get the registration done. Along with this, the details of the immovable properties of temples, monasteries and trusts will also be made available to the State Religious Trust Board.

The government also instructed that the details of the immovable properties related to the temples and monasteries which have been registered should also be immediately made available to the Bihar State Religious Trust Board (BSBRT) so that it can be uploaded on its website.

The State Religious Trust Board comes under the Law Department of the Government of Bihar. On the whole matter, Law Minister of the Bihar Government, Nitin Naveen has said that all the District Magistrates have been instructed to ensure that all unregistered temples, monasteries and trusts are registered on a priority basis.

Along with this, the details of immovable properties should be immediately made available to BSBRT. Law Minister Nitin Naveen said that till now only 18 districts have provided data to BSBRT. Law Minister Nitin Naveen has said that all the District Magistrates should ensure that the immovable properties of the temples and monasteries which have been registered in the state are not sold/purchased. He informed that as per the Bihar Hindu Religious Trust Act, 1950, all the public temples/monasteries, trusts and dharamshalas in Bihar should be registered under BSBRT. The act of selling/purchasing immovable properties is illegal and strict action will be taken against those doing so.

According to the latest data received by BSBRT from 35 districts, there are about 2,512 unregistered temples or monasteries in the state and they own 4321.64 acres of land.

According to the data of the Law Department of the Government of Bihar, the total number of registered temples in the state is around 2,499 and they own more than 18,456 acres of land.
