Energy Department Aims to Enhance Consumer Convenience and Address Misconceptions

A high-level meeting chaired by Mr. Pankaj Kumar Pal, Secretary of the Energy Department and CMD of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, has laid out significant steps to enhance the effectiveness and consumer benefits of smart prepaid meters being installed across the state. The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Mr. Vishal Kapoor, CEO of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), Mr. Mahendra Kumar, MD of South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited, and Mr. Nilesh Ramchandra Devre, MD of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited.

The state’s power distribution companies are working diligently to ensure maximum benefit for consumers using the advanced smart prepaid meters. In light of recent misconceptions about the technology, the Energy Department has launched awareness campaigns to educate the public, resulting in increased consumer trust and interest.

Key Announcements on Smart Prepaid Meters

Mr. Pal emphasized the department’s commitment to addressing public concerns and ensuring transparency. The following consumer-centric benefits of smart prepaid meters were highlighted during the meeting:

No Upfront Cost for Consumers: Installation of smart prepaid meters, replacing old meters, is completely free of charge.

Automatic Billing: These meters eliminate human intervention in meter reading and billing, ensuring error-free electricity bills.

Real-Time Usage Data: Consumers can monitor their daily energy consumption, enabling better understanding and control over their usage habits.

Energy Savings: Real-time data helps consumers manage and reduce excess consumption, leading to lower expenses.

Interest Benefits: Consumers maintaining a balance of Rs. 2,000 or more in their smart prepaid meter accounts are eligible for attractive interest rates:

  • For 3 months: Above the prevailing bank rate.
  • For 3-6 months: Bank rate + 0.25%.
  • For more than 6 months: Bank rate + 0.50%.

Ease of Recharge: Consumers can recharge their meters online from the comfort of their homes, choosing any amount as per their convenience.

Support for Solar Energy: Smart prepaid meters are compatible with grid-connected solar panels, eliminating the need for separate net meters.

Flexibility on Overuse: No penalties will be charged for exceeding approved load within six months of installation.

Mr. Pal stressed the importance of dispelling myths about the technology. Regional officers and implementing agencies have been directed to transparently communicate the benefits of smart prepaid meters. Awareness campaigns have been pivotal in enhancing public understanding, alleviating concerns, and promoting energy efficiency in Bihar.

This initiative underscores Bihar’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable and consumer-friendly energy management. With the rollout of smart prepaid meters, the state aims to empower consumers with greater control, convenience, and cost savings in their energy usage.
