North Dinajpur: A political storm erupted in West Bengal on Wednesday after four children, aged between 5 and 12, died after getting buried in a trench dug along the India-Bangladesh border in Chopra, North Dinajpur district.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) launched a scathing attack on the Border Security Force (BSF), alleging its "negligence" led to the tragedy. Party spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya took to social media, questioning Home Minister Amit Shah and the BSF, calling the incident a result of "indifference" and "carelessness."

TMC Seeks Answers, Announces Compensation

Bhattacharya demanded accountability, asking, "Who is to be held responsible for this tragedy?" He shared pictures of the deceased children and questioned the BSF's actions, highlighting their ages and innocence. The TMC announced Rs 3 lakh compensation for each of the bereaved families.

BSF Clarifies, Offers Condolences

The BSF issued a statement refuting allegations of negligence, outlining the events leading to the incident. They clarified that a local resident requested permission to dig a trench to level his tea garden near the border, claiming it would help prevent cattle smuggling. The BSF, stating its role in controlling such smuggling, agreed to the request.

However, the BSF emphasized that the digging was done with a JCB excavator under the supervision of the resident, not the force. They explained that after the work was completed, a portion of the trench caved in on children playing nearby, leading to the tragedy.

The BSF expressed deep condolences to the families and highlighted their immediate response in rescue efforts, using their vehicles to transport the children to the hospital. However, medical personnel declared them dead on arrival.

Investigation and Political Repercussions

While the details remain under investigation, the incident has ignited political tensions in West Bengal. The TMC's sharp criticism and compensation announcement reflect their attempt to corner the BJP-led government on the issue. Whether further action will be taken against any party involved remains to be seen.
