The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) inaugurated a two-day National Symposium and Industry Meet on "Emerging Technologies in Infrastructure Development" in New Delhi on May 9th, 2024. The event, aimed at fostering collaboration and innovation in infrastructure development, brings together the Armed Forces, academic institutions, industry leaders, and DRDO personnel.

Self-Reliance and Infrastructure Development: A Shared Goal

In his opening address, Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane emphasized the importance of "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-reliant India). He highlighted the need for self-reliance in all sectors to address future challenges and emphasized its potential to create employment opportunities for India's young population.

Specifically within the defense sector, self-reliance is crucial for national security. "There is no trusted trend in geopolitics," stated Shri Aramane, underlining the importance of developing domestic capabilities to safeguard national interests. Achieving self-reliance in infrastructure development, particularly along the borders, will be a major step towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The Defence Secretary called upon private sector infrastructure firms to contribute to strengthening border infrastructure. Highlighting the importance of supporting the "Vibrant Villages Programme," he urged firms to establish dedicated sections focusing on development in border areas. This initiative aims to incentivize people to remain in their border villages, fostering a stronger national presence.

Collaboration for Innovation and Skill Development

Shri Aramane announced DRDO's commitment to supporting the private sector in research and development. Collaboration between DRDO and industry can lead to innovative solutions for faster and more efficient infrastructure development. He urged industry partners to work closely with the government, focusing on mass production of high-quality products within stipulated timeframes. Collaboration with academia was also emphasized as a way to enhance workforce skills and translate technological advancements into tangible applications.

Embracing New Technologies for Sustainable Growth

Speaking at the event, DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat stressed the importance of infrastructure for national development. He highlighted the rapid growth of India's technical infrastructure, crucial for maintaining strategic deterrence. The symposium serves as a platform to explore integrating cutting-edge technologies into infrastructure development. "It's time to explore ways to incorporate the latest technologies," stated Dr. Kamat, acknowledging the need to catch up with global best practices while acknowledging the positive steps already taken.

Igniting Minds and Fostering Progress

Director General, Resource & Management Shri Purushottam Bej, elaborated on the symposium's agenda. Over 500 delegates, including users, industry leaders, academics, scientists, and students from IITs, NITs, and other engineering colleges, will participate in technical sessions and student competitions. These sessions aim to spark new ideas and equip users, planners, designers, and architects with the knowledge needed to realize the government's vision. The symposium is expected to be a stepping stone for advancements in infrastructure development across India.

Beyond the Symposium: Exhibitions and Knowledge Sharing

The event also features an industry exhibition showcasing the latest technologies and products developed by private partners. Additionally, a symposium souvenir and the "Research & Development Construction Establishment Work Procedure 2024" were released to mark the occasion.

This symposium signifies DRDO's commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation in infrastructure development. The focus on self-reliance, cutting-edge technologies, and skill development promises significant advancements in this critical sector.
