Vedanta Aluminium signs agreement with GAIL for natural gas supply at Odisha unit
Vedanta Aluminium said that this change in natural gas is likely to start by the end of next year.
Vedanta Aluminium has signed an agreement with public-sector gas company GAIL (India) Ltd. This agreement is for the supply of natural gas to the company's smelter unit located at Jharsuguda in Odisha.
The country's leading aluminium producer has signed a gas sale agreement with GAIL Gas Ltd., a subsidiary of GAIL (India) Ltd. Vedanta Aluminium said in a statement on Wednesday that this change in natural gas is likely to start by the end of next year. It is estimated that carbon emissions will be reduced by about 47,292 tonnes annually.
According to the statement, Vedanta is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 by implementing a dual strategy. This dual strategy includes increasing the use of renewable energy and creating 'carbon sinks' i.e. absorbing carbon through afforestation efforts.
Vedanta's non-executive director and Hindustan Zinc Ltd. Chairperson of the Aluminium Corporation, Priya Agarwal Hebbar said, "Our partnership with GAIL Gas Ltd. is a testimony to our commitment to reduce carbon emissions and adopt clean energy solutions."
GAIL Gas Limited will install a 7.5 km long pipeline to supply about 32,000 standard cubic meters of natural gas per day. Its contract period will be five years once the pipeline is operational. Vedanta Aluminium produced 23.7 lakh tonnes of aluminium in FY 2023-24.
