Only 22 carat gold is used in making jewellery and this gold is 91.6 percent pure. But the effect is that by adulterating it, 89 or 90 percent pure gold is sold as 22-carat gold. That is why whenever you buy jewellery, take information about its hallmark. Information about hallmark and purity:

375 hallmark = 37.5% pure gold

585 hallmark = 58.5% pure gold

750 hallmark = 75.0% pure gold

916 hallmark = 91.6% pure gold (22 carat)

990 hallmark = 99.0% pure gold

999 hallmark = 99.9% pure gold (24 carat)

The hallmark number of all carats of gold is different. For example, 999 is written on 24-carat, 958 on 23-carat gold, 916 on 22-carat, 875 on 21-carat and 750 on 18-carat. This leaves no doubt about the purity. Carat gold means 1/24 percent gold, if your jewellery is of 22 carats then divide 22 by 24 and multiply it by 100.
